I am a 1st year international student. I entered SibFU for full-time education and immediately got into distance learning. I was impressed by the fact that the university has its own platform: E-courses, which makes it possible to quickly receive and complete assignments without problems. I study online, and my classmates are in full-time form - they are always in touch with me. Although this epidemic situation makes it difficult to obtain higher education, it also makes it possible to develop online learning.

A wiseman said the rich man is the person who has many beautiful memories in one’s life. In that sense, my three year stay at SibFU and in Krasnoyarsk made my life richer and meaningful. It was not easy decision to come to Siberia. It was a very challenging decision for me to concern my health condition. Many of Koreans have a strong negative stereotype on (about) living in Siberia. I am very glad that I found out that it is wrong.

First, I do really appreciate help from faculty and staff. From the very first day they made me feel comfortable. Of course, sometimes it was frustrating and not easy for me to communicate with people. But I could feel genuine concern and love from my colleagues. I’ve felt a sense of belonging here ; l felt like part of a big family. They were always there when I needed help from them.

Second, it was not easy to break the wall with students during the first year. I bet many of students felt uncomfortable with a strange Korean professor to have lessons in English. As you know, many students are very much reserved and hesitant to share their thoughts and feelings during classes. When I was a graduate student in the U.S., I felt the same way as they did. Because I did not feel comfortable to speak in English although class participation counted for a big portion of your final grade. I did my best to make my students feel comfortable in my classes, and suggested them to build a supporting, friendly class atmosphere so that we could feel more comfortable to take a risk to make a mistake in expressing our thoughts and feelings in classes. As time went by, we could develop intimacy in our relationship. They felt more comfortable and confident in expressing their ideas. Their writing and presentation skills were getting better. Also, I’d better not to fail to mention about my experience of summer school. It was fun and exciting experience. Hopefully, what we discussed and shared in our classes could help their future career and life. I miss our pizza party and appreciate students’ ‘thank you’ notes with our class picture. And I do really appreciate all my students who did bear with me three years.

Lastly, I never had a problem with local food. I enjoyed canteen meals and eating out very much. I really enjoyed visiting colleagues’ dachas and having shashlik and banya. I realized the banya plays a critical role to build bonding with your friends in Russia. I miss the banya we used to go after class everyday during summer school. I also enjoyed cultural events visiting museums, concerts, operas, and ballets very much. And I miss going to the Gym with colleagues for my workout, taking a walk white butch forest covered with snow right next my flat. I miss them very much! Although winter in Siberia is cold (I guess, not bad these days because of global warming) and long, but it was amazing experience for me to observe that plants are coming out when time comes. I have a deep respect for nature and people who endure with severe living conditions.

I do really miss my dear friends, students, food, concerts, and beautiful nature with snow. At this unprecedented time, wish you all stay safe and healthy. Look forward to meeting you in the near future. Thank you all!
